orion or IpMonitor Automation?

I'm looking into ways to mass add devices to a network monitoring software using scripts. It doesn't IpMonitor has any feature that would let me add devices to it with command line scripts or POST. Do Orion / NPM have any kind of support for this? or a way I could upload devices from a database  / just without gui interaction, effectively giving me the same value? Thank you.

Hello Fellow Community members....

I need your help..  I am running Soalrwinds IP Monitor 9 and need to set up a disk space alert for a Linux box.

Basically the apache logs are filling up the /var partition and I would like a monitor to email me when it gets above 80%.

However I can only see support for a disk space monitor on a windows based machine.

Is there anyway to monitor disk space on a box running linux?

Many thanks for your time

AS400 Monitoring?

I have a couple of AS/400's on site (model 720's) and I want to monitor disk space and CPU via ipMonitor. I know SNMP is working on the boxes as have had other SNMP utils able to pick up this info but there isn't a MIB available for ipMonitor.

 Anyone doing this already?

Thanks.

SNMPv3 Does not work

Hello All,

IpMonitor Server: 10.8.2 Build 1500

I have created SNMPv3 credentials on few hardware devices like APC ATS and PDU with below configurations:

Authentication Protocol: Available options are SHA and MD5. Treid both

Privacy Protocol: Available options are AES and DES. Tried both.

Now i created a SNMPv3 credential in IPMonitor as below configurations with exact same username and password set in the device :

Usage Restrictions: May be authorized for use by any account

Disaply Categories: Only selected SNMPv3 Authentication.

Everytime i scan the device with SNMPv3 monitor it crashes IPMonitor service. The service goes into stopping state and i have to start the service. Can somebody please help me setup SNMPv3 monitor?

Thanks,

Dhyanesh Mehta

Monitoring Printers

I haven't spent to much time on this yet but is there a way that I can monitor a printer, such as toner levels or fuser, so when they get to a certain level I can setup an alert to go to who maintaines the printers?  I have fooled around with searching the OID's but I am still trying to get a hang on those.  Any help is appreciated...thanks.

Is there a way to monitor an .exe that's running on a Windows server?  For example, say I have a process that shows up in the Windows Task Manager as application.exe, can I monitor it with ipMonitor 9.0?

It's not a Windows service, but rather a process that's running on the server.

 Thanks!

email alert not working

email alerts have been working for years with no problem.  all of a sudden a couple of days ago email alerts stopped working.  need assistance to troubleshoot and fix.  here are some points regarding the issue for us.

1. the monitors are going red and are set to alert.

2. there are group alerts setup.

3. if i go into a group alert via

  • Configuration
  • Alert List
  • go to that alert
  • Force Test

the alert works fine and i receive the email

4. if a monitor goes red i do not receive email.  no changes on monitor alert setup.  has been working for years.

5. we recently had an exchange upgrade but that was about 6 months ago and it was working after the upgrade.

6. we recently had a mail domain name change so we edited all of the To/From email addresses in the alerts and in Configuration, System Settings, Identification

7. this started happening after the ipmonitor server was rebooted a couple of days ago.

8. i noticed at first that the tests in #3 above were giving cannot connect errors.  i wound up having to go to

  • Configuration
  • System Settings
  • Email Delivery

- i had to add SMTP relay server option with exchange server domain name and port 25.  after doing this i was successful on manual test in #3.  however automatic alerts are not working.

oh and also i can talk to the exchange server via telnet from ipmonitor server and send mail that way no problem (like this example http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119.  also email server pings from ipmonitor server.

can you explain how i can force test and alert and get the email however when the monitor goes red and is supposed to alert it is not doing it?

or better yet can you help me resolve this issue.  it doesn't make sense to me.

Average Disk Queue length Monitor question

$

Hi all,

Thank you for all the help so far, I have a few of questions about setting up a monitor for average disk queue length.  I created monitors for the (3) available monitors on my server.  I have a 2 different 'drives' one in the local C: drive and the other is an array, the D:\ drive.

As stated, I have creared the following monitors:

1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.1.1.1.7.2.67.58
1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.1.1.1.7.2.69.58
1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.1.1.1.7.6.95.84.111.116.97.108

I think the first corresponds to the C: drive, the second corresponds to the D: and the third is the sum of them together.  Can I get clarification on this point?  Does anyone know if my assumption is correct?

My second question is this, within the monitor while it is running,  there is a 'value' variable that populates with a number as I increase the load on the disk queues.  However it never seems to be exactly the same as the number reported by Perfmon.  Of course, it could be that I am just not be able to physically switch back and forth while forcing a test to see the same numeric value.  Should I expect this number to be the same as reported by Perfmon?

My third question also relates to the 'value' variable.  Unless the load is greater than 1 it doesn't seem to report anything.  Ever.  However the value is reported to four decimal places behind the integer.  For example, most of the time it sits at 0.0000 while Perfmon is happily reporting 0.027 or so.  Is this by design or is this an incorrectly defined monitor?

Finally I have set my Analysis of Test Results to the Boolean range

Pass if :

<= 2

OR

<=0

My goal was to set a test that would pass and not alert so long as the average disk queue length didn't sustain a load greater than 2 for 2 minutes or more.  If it does, then I want to alert the administrators and take action.  Is my logic consistent?

thanks for all the help,

Jerry

External Process Return Value

When an external process monitor fails all we get is "The return value does not match the expected value." In some cases, the return value has some meaning. Can you please also include the actual return value instead of just saying it didn't match.

Thank you,

Adrian

monitoring windows client ... IPMonitor refuses to add any other monitors except ping

$

hello,

i'm demo-ing ipmonitor here in our company to see if it can fill small adhoc client and server monitoring requirement as and when they prop up. currently i'm trying to remotely monitor a windows xp client via WMI to make sure its CPU and other resources are in order.

try as i might, i can't get ipmonitor to add any other monitors except Ping. Everytime I add the credentials for windows authentication and click next, the screen goes off to do a discovery and comes back with a ping monitor. i can rpc fine from the server in which ipmonitor is installed (\\ipaddress\c$) and furthermore even the remote wmitest utility (wbemtest.exe) can query the client... however ipmonitor simply refuses to use anything besides ping as a health monitor.

i tried downloading WMI monitor just to make sure it wasn't server related and sure enough, it works fine ... problem ofcourse being its very limited in use and doesnt show you any historical usage, etc...

i'm at my wit's end here guys .... any help would be greatly appreciated...

Monitors randomly failing

About two weeks ago an Amazon Server I have been monitoring has been going a bit wonky.  It will randomly report that the remote device failed to respond.  I have also started another Amazon Server and am trying to set up monitoring for that but cannot get the authentication to work for scanning to add monitors.  Any ideas?

Printer monitoring via OIDs

I am curious if there is way to monitor things like toner low and paper out/ jam using OIDs. The current OID im using is straight from the SNMP search(1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.5.1.2.1) and according to the decsription it should funtion properly. However, the values returned are not accurate and I am not informed when the toner is low or if paper is out. I have tested this by manually removing the paper and the toner low warning is already active. I have an HP 2840 colorjet that's Jetdirect compatible

I've noticed it's no longer on the product lists on SolarWind's website.  The product roadmap hasn't been updated in several years.  I haven't been able to find any EOL announcements except for those regarding pre-10.0 versions, nor anything obvious on first glance in the product forums.

Adding "Parent Device" field to NOC view/details view

$

A bit of research showed me how to add the "parent device" field to the devices view:

- Right-click to the right of the column headers in devices view

- Add it from device properties

- Go to configuration -> my settings and save it

But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add it to the NOC view. As far as I can tell, adding the fields to NOC view is the only way to get them to show up in the "Edit monitor" view (which we also use as a "details" view.)

Compare and contrast the two screenshots attached. One has the device settings and one does not. I'm not even sure HOW I have that on one of the systems in question, since I didn't add it - some default setting that I messed up on the other system?

Any insight from anyone who might be hanging around?
