Is it possible to monitor when a server reboots? I know that a Ping monitor will show when a server is no longer responding, but that could just indicate that there's a problem with the network, NIC, etc. and that the server may still be up and running. Ideally I would like to have an alert sent out via email if one of the servers actually performs a reboot. Thanks in advance.

IPMonitor Upgrade - New Features
When is the last time SolarWinds released a decent product update for IPMonitor? I am not sure even worth paying maintenance renewal every year!! Quality of this product is degrading day by day. I think its time to look for other monitoring software.
What We're Working On - ipMonitor
To receive updates on the ipMonitor roadmap, JOIN thwack and BOOKMARK this page
Since releasing 10.7, we are actively in the research and planning phases for the next release. Some new and exciting features we are working on are:
- Generic WMI Monitor
- Report SQL values returned by a Monitor within a report and notification/alerts
- Email Cc: a notification alias/person and/or be able to pass all notification members to a single notification (since disparate support groups might have no idea who is also receiving the notification)
- SNMPv3 Polling Support
- Add support for Interface-MIB 64-bit counters (like in Orion)
- Ability to specify backup SMTP server
- The Alert Wizard notification template options in alphabetical order
- Exporting Statistics to CSV

IPv6 support
Where does IPv6 support sit in the ipMonitor roadmap? Hopefully its sooner rather than later.
I hadn't been too concerned about this previously, but today I attended an industry summit on the topic. IPv4 address exhaustion is real and probably closer than we think. The experts in our part of the world estimate our RIR will run out of addresses to allocate around mid next year. Organisations are well advised to be proactive and begin transitioning towards IPv6 now rather than leaving it until a crisis hits and trying to deal with it then. This came from none other than Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist and the father of the internet.
I'm interested to know if ipMonitor will be able to keep pace with us as we transition to IPv6, or will it be relegated to monitoring IPv4 devices only for the foreseeable future?
Thanks - Simon
Monitoring Printers
I haven't spent to much time on this yet but is there a way that I can monitor a printer, such as toner levels or fuser, so when they get to a certain level I can setup an alert to go to who maintaines the printers? I have fooled around with searching the OID's but I am still trying to get a hang on those. Any help is appreciated...thanks.
email alert not working
email alerts have been working for years with no problem. all of a sudden a couple of days ago email alerts stopped working. need assistance to troubleshoot and fix. here are some points regarding the issue for us.
1. the monitors are going red and are set to alert.
2. there are group alerts setup.
3. if i go into a group alert via
- Configuration
- Alert List
- go to that alert
- Force Test
the alert works fine and i receive the email
4. if a monitor goes red i do not receive email. no changes on monitor alert setup. has been working for years.
5. we recently had an exchange upgrade but that was about 6 months ago and it was working after the upgrade.
6. we recently had a mail domain name change so we edited all of the To/From email addresses in the alerts and in Configuration, System Settings, Identification
7. this started happening after the ipmonitor server was rebooted a couple of days ago.
8. i noticed at first that the tests in #3 above were giving cannot connect errors. i wound up having to go to
- Configuration
- System Settings
- Email Delivery
- i had to add SMTP relay server option with exchange server domain name and port 25. after doing this i was successful on manual test in #3. however automatic alerts are not working.
oh and also i can talk to the exchange server via telnet from ipmonitor server and send mail that way no problem (like this example http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119. also email server pings from ipmonitor server.
can you explain how i can force test and alert and get the email however when the monitor goes red and is supposed to alert it is not doing it?
or better yet can you help me resolve this issue. it doesn't make sense to me.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to monitor a "Warning" or "Error" in the Application section of the Event Viewer for a specific string:
"WARNING: exceeded"
I would like the alert to be E-mail,.
Thank you.

401 Access Denied using the WSDL API
I am running ipMonitor 10.6 and cannot for the LIFE of me connect to the WSDL via code.
I can see the URL in my browser just fine, but, on the same machine, via code, I immediately get a 401 Access Denied error whether I use SOAP or CURL.
Documentation is dry at best and there aren't many examples out there.
$context = stream_context_create(array('ssl' => array('verify_peer' => FALSE)));
$soapURL = 'https://domain.com/soap/status.asmx?wsdl';
$soapParameters = array (
'login' => 'user',
'password' => 'password',
'WSDL' => TRUE,
'stream_context' => $context
);
$soapClient = new SoapClient($soapURL,$soapParameters);
And that yields:
HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.0 401 Access Denied
Historical Data
Hello,
I was recently asked to pull performance data on one of our systems, much to my horror I have no historical data on any of my nodes. I went to run a report and when I finish filling in the info, server name, the monitors I want data on, the date etc. I get nothing for my results. Could I have missed something on setup? I'm working in a Windows environment monitoring around 45 systems.
How to alert ONLY on multiple events in Event Log?
Is there a method to configure an Event Log monitor where ipMonitor can be configured to alert only if I receive 10 or more Application Event Errors from a specific Event Source "x" within a one-hour timespan?
Printer monitoring via OIDs
I am curious if there is way to monitor things like toner low and paper out/ jam using OIDs. The current OID im using is straight from the SNMP search(1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.5.1.2.1) and according to the decsription it should funtion properly. However, the values returned are not accurate and I am not informed when the toner is low or if paper is out. I have tested this by manually removing the paper and the toner low warning is already active. I have an HP 2840 colorjet that's Jetdirect compatible
External process monitor calling Powershell script not updating
I'm attempting to monitor that the VPN connection between two servers is up, so I've created a Powershell script which connects to one, instructs it to test the connection to the other, and then output the result as either 1 for success or 2 for failure. In IPMonitor (8.5) I've created an External Process monitor which calls that script, and initially seems to work, eg it shows success and confirms the return value was 1.
To be certain, I updated the ps1 script to point to a non-existant IP address, and confirmed from Powershell that it now reports a failure. IPMonitor however continues to report it as successful. I've even tried renaming the ps1 file, yet even though the script is no longer there, IPMonitor continues to report that it is testing and the test is being successful.
Does IPMonitor cache the script it is calling or something, or does anyone have any other suggestions for what might be happening?
The Powershell script I'm calling is :
$username = "server\ipmonitor"
$password = ConvertTo-SecureString "password" -AsPlainText -Force
$myCred = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential $username, $password
if (test-connection -computername 192.168.1.1 -source 192.168.2.1 -Credential $myCred -Quiet)
{write-host "1"}
else {write-host "2"}
and my monitor settings are :
Executable Name : powershell.exe
Directory : c:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\
Command Line Parameters : vpntest.ps1
Startup Directory : c:\batchscripts\
Credential for Monitoring : [No Credential]
Compare the Process Return Value : selected
Expectged Return Value : 1
Thanks
Keith
Move ipMonitor install to a new server
I have a trial version of ipMonitor configured with many alerts. Now that I have bought a license I would like to move this configuration to my Production monitoring server and install the license there. What is the best procedure for doing this? I poked around in the manual but didn't see anything directly addressing this, but feel free to point me to any existing documentation on this topic.
