can you Monitor and report on Page File usage with IPMonitor 9?

Hi there - a couple of questions please.

I've got the eval edition of IPMonitor 9 and have found the page file useage counters under Exchange/SQL monitors, but how can I monitor/report on these counters directly.  I can only seem to monitor and report at the 'Monitor' level, not the 'counter' level.

Also SQL, I can't seem to get monitoring working the error I get is 'Unable to connect to the remote device'

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Move monitors or not?

I'm still a bit unsure if I should move some of my monitors from one device to another and would like some advice.  For example, the server where I have ipMonitor installed...that device in ipMonitor has several monitors within in that are External Process and File script monitors that monitor different devices.  After my upgrade from 8.5 they all showed up under this ipMonitor server device since all these File and External Process monitors are scripts that physically exist in a folder on the ipMonitor server device....but it gets confusing....I can understand why they are within that deivce, but I feel like I need to move each monitor to the device that it is monitoring.  What do others think?

Also, has anyone come up with an easy method of moving several monitors from one device into Orphaned Objects without using that RegEx method, so, if I do decide to move these monitors to their respective devices (about 100 of them), I don't need to edit each one, Move To Orpahned Objects, the Move to the new device?

 Thanks!

SOAP web service monitor type. - Feature request

We are in the process of migrating from SiteScope to IPMonitor version 9.  SiteScope has a monitor type for SOAP based web service calls.   I'm familar with ASMX type calls which can have querystring parameters.  The type of SOAP services are related to IBM Websphere.  Has anyone found a monitor or workaround for this type of situation?

TIA.

Hi SolarWinds. How do I take a backup of my IPMonitor config? ie: can i export everything to a html/xml file so if something happened to my monitoring server, or I wanted to move IPMonitor, I can then restore all the devices to be monitored quickly?

Reports in IP Monitor

Dear All,

I am little new to entire suite of Solarwinds products. I downloaded IP monitor and installed the same. I can see reports of CPU, MEMORY, etc. are provided. So is there any difference between the reports provided by SAM and IP monitor. Because both gives these kind of reports I believe. Kindly clarify.

IPMonitor stopped capturing report data?

I run IPMonitor at work (love it) and downloaded the free edition for my home lab environment.  I just noticed for the last month IPMonitor has stopped producing reports with values.  Everything is blank or zero.  At home I'm running Windows Server 2016 and IPM 10.9.0.

Anyone else bump into this?

email alert not working

email alerts have been working for years with no problem.  all of a sudden a couple of days ago email alerts stopped working.  need assistance to troubleshoot and fix.  here are some points regarding the issue for us.

1. the monitors are going red and are set to alert.

2. there are group alerts setup.

3. if i go into a group alert via

  • Configuration
  • Alert List
  • go to that alert
  • Force Test

the alert works fine and i receive the email

4. if a monitor goes red i do not receive email.  no changes on monitor alert setup.  has been working for years.

5. we recently had an exchange upgrade but that was about 6 months ago and it was working after the upgrade.

6. we recently had a mail domain name change so we edited all of the To/From email addresses in the alerts and in Configuration, System Settings, Identification

7. this started happening after the ipmonitor server was rebooted a couple of days ago.

8. i noticed at first that the tests in #3 above were giving cannot connect errors.  i wound up having to go to

  • Configuration
  • System Settings
  • Email Delivery

- i had to add SMTP relay server option with exchange server domain name and port 25.  after doing this i was successful on manual test in #3.  however automatic alerts are not working.

oh and also i can talk to the exchange server via telnet from ipmonitor server and send mail that way no problem (like this example http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119.  also email server pings from ipmonitor server.

can you explain how i can force test and alert and get the email however when the monitor goes red and is supposed to alert it is not doing it?

or better yet can you help me resolve this issue.  it doesn't make sense to me.

SNMP issue with promiscuous mode on virtual switch

Hey everyone, just wanted to get a quick post up in case anyone else ever runs into this issue.  Promiscuous mode enabled on a virtual switch in vmware ESX (4.1 in my case) caused my snmp based monitors in ipMonitor to show as down for machines on that virtual switch.  The error in ipMonitor was "The response from the remote device does not adhere to protocol specification".  Setting promiscuous mode back to the default of 'reject' got my snmp monitors behaving again. I haven't put a whole lot of time into troubleshooting further, my workaround was to create another virtual switch on a separate nic port, and move the machine that required promiscuous mode onto that switch. I will be much more cautious with promiscuous mode in the future, and probably eventually open a case with VMware.

How to monitor a Windows process

Is there a way to monitor an .exe that's running on a Windows server?  For example, say I have a process that shows up in the Windows Task Manager as application.exe, can I monitor it with ipMonitor 9.0?

It's not a Windows service, but rather a process that's running on the server.

 Thanks!

Server Reboot Monitoring?

Is it possible to monitor when a server reboots?  I know that a Ping monitor will show when a server is no longer responding, but that could just indicate that there's a problem with the network, NIC, etc. and that the server may still be up and running.  Ideally I would like to have an alert sent out via email if one of the servers actually performs a reboot.  Thanks in advance.

Monitoring Printers

I haven't spent to much time on this yet but is there a way that I can monitor a printer, such as toner levels or fuser, so when they get to a certain level I can setup an alert to go to who maintaines the printers?  I have fooled around with searching the OID's but I am still trying to get a hang on those.  Any help is appreciated...thanks.

AS400 Monitoring?

I have a couple of AS/400's on site (model 720's) and I want to monitor disk space and CPU via ipMonitor. I know SNMP is working on the boxes as have had other SNMP utils able to pick up this info but there isn't a MIB available for ipMonitor.

 Anyone doing this already?

Thanks.

Best practices / naming convention for ipMonitor?

Morning.

I have used various versions of ipMonitor at different sites since 1999, and have always found it to be flexible and effective.

With the 'myriad' of network, server, and desktop devices (and software) on the market and in use, has anyone ever published a 'Best Practices / Naming Convention' or 'Tips / Tricks / Traps' document for ipMonitor?

I'm sure my way of naming / organizing / alarming / reporting is not the best, and I'm 'always' looking to improve...

Thanks.

ipMonitor 10 - updating HTTP: User Experience Monitor using API

$

ipMonitor Info:

  Version: 10.0

  Build: 1371

Hoping someone might be able to provide some insight on an issue i'm having...

I work for a small-midsize ASP/Hosting company. We develop and host our application on our equipment and host it to our customers over HTTP/HTTPS. Occasionally our app crashes or becomes unresponsive so i have created a monitor in ipMonitor called HTTP: User Experience which sends an HTTP request to a specific .jsp of the app to see if it responds. The monitor grabs the file size and checksum of the specified URL and matches it to the values that were saved in the monitor when it was initially created.

My issue is that we make regular changes and updates to our app which means we need to recompile the code. When we do this, the .jsp that we query gets changed (every single jsp gets touched) so the checksum of the file comes back different than what was originally set in the monitor which causes it to go red and send alerts regardless of whether or not the page is responsive. The only way to rectify the issue is to manually login to ipMonitor, navigate to the monitor, select update under the Analysis of test results section, and then select apply once the new checksum is generated. We make changes so often that this can be a pain and a lot of times people either forget to do it or just don't bother since they know someone else will.

I have been working with the API (via PowerShell) for quite awhile to disable/enable monitors or make changes to drive space thresholds so i'm pretty familiar with it but i can't figure out how to initiate the update to get the new checksum. I can manually change the values but i don't know what ipMonitor is using to get the checksum. It's definitely not MD5 or SHA... it looks like it may be some sort of CRC but i haven't been able to reproduce a checksum using any of my tools.

Does anyone know what ipMonitor uses to get the checksum for HTTP requests??

Or better yet, does anyone know if there is a way to initiate an update through the actual API?

Here is a picture of the monitor for clarification:

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

WAVECOM GSM Modem not work .

 Hello there  8-)

I've brought a GSM modem and config everything I could find from the Doc.and once I trigger the SMS alert, the IPmonitor sent a SMS to my mobile properly .but after that, the SMS alert never worked again. 8-(

I've checked other post on the forum, and also change the bit rate to 115200.

my GSM MODEM is using the chipset WAVECOM Q2403A which compatible with GSM Phase2 / 2+
I could use AT command to sent message from the GSM MODEM.so seems the GSM modem should not have any problem.

BTW: coud you give me a more detailed configuration guide for how to connect a GSM MODEM ? or where I could got more debug message ?

thanks in advance.
